You don't really have to grind, you just have to know how to spend your resources. If able, join some multiplayer lobbies and utilize their town areas, while saving your gold/ore. Always get shaftlocke pickaxe and alway use the alters that require you to sace a stat (if able) for the chance to get ore pickup.

I know enemy patterns, experience rewards, gold/ore drops, that's all the same in new game plus. Since you can get pretty close to finishing upgrades in a regular new game, though, what other ways are there to power up your character? Do levels past 20 give aynthing special past some skill points, or do the difficuluty levels of the NG+ modes not increase very quickly?

I have a level 8 paladin atm, and only just unlocked tier 3 town (and still missing quite some tier2 upgrades). I feel the fastest way to find ore is going very fast trough the mines. And the grind is slooow. A full grind from level 1 to somewhere in the castle leves / third boss, can take one to two hours. And the loot may be something like 2030 ore and 67k gold. The ore isn't even enough for a single upgrade and the gold barely covers a single upgrade at the blacksmith.

What to you mean, the town progress is the same for all the party members. The host upgrades his town, which is used for the party, but the guests also get the same amount as the host and can immediatly use the ore in their singeplayer runs. The guests town gets the same amount of unlocks as the host. Only character unlocks are gated i believe. 1.

For gold and ore you have in the dungeons mine carts to send it to town for future upgrades, if you don't send gold and ore back to town and die you lose it. Upon death you also will lose all items you found. If you die you spawn back in the town where you can upgrade and buy stuff and try again, for that you need the gold and ore you send to town.

It's very easy to grind game with ranger since long time with blood rites, good statues, drinks and attune mobs and bosses with book and monster. With lucky hat and staff of volatiles casts of course. I have only around 69 blood rites. Less than friends. But I continue to grind game around ng670. Not hard and legit. I played few runs with friends.

It's a challenge mode. Grinding for power defeats the purpose. If you want to grind there are infinite ng levels in normal. Now that you say this I think the best option for tweaking merc mode would be a large gold bonus.
